Vehicle: 2020 Volvo S60 T5 Momentum

Hi all, I'm experiencing some concerning transmission behavior in my 2020 Volvo S60 T5 Momentum. It has about 45,000 miles on it. Lately, I've noticed harsh shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd gear, and sometimes a noticeable hesitation or 'clunk' when accelerating from a stop or at very low speeds.

It feels like the transmission is struggling to decide which gear to be in. It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently, and it's making city driving quite uncomfortable. I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger problem.

Has anyone with a 2020 S60 or similar model experienced this? Is this something that can be fixed with a software update, or am I looking at a transmission repair?

Harsh shifting and hesitation in Volvo's 8-speed automatic transmission (AWF8F35/AWF8F45) can be a concern, but often it's not indicative of a major transmission failure, especially in newer models like your 2020 S60. Several factors can contribute to these symptoms:

  1. Software Adaptation: The transmission control module (TCM) continuously adapts to your driving style. Sometimes, this adaptation can lead to less smooth shifts. A software update or a TCM reset/re-adaptation procedure performed by a dealership can often resolve this. This essentially 're-teaches' the transmission how to shift.
  2. Low Transmission Fluid: While less common in sealed units, extremely low or degraded transmission fluid can cause shifting issues. Volvo specifies a 'lifetime fill,' but severe conditions can affect fluid quality over time. A technician can check the fluid level and condition.
  3. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is a critical component that directs transmission fluid to engage gears. Wear or sticking valves within the valve body can lead to erratic shifting. This is a more complex repair but still less severe than a full transmission replacement.
  4. Engine Mounts: Worn engine or transmission mounts can sometimes mimic transmission issues, causing clunks or jolts during shifts, especially at low speeds.

When to See a Shop: It's highly recommended to take your 2020 S60 to a Volvo dealership or a reputable independent Volvo specialist as soon as possible. They can perform a diagnostic scan for any stored transmission-related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), such as P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific codes related to shift solenoids. They can also check for any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that address these symptoms. Early diagnosis can prevent minor issues from escalating into more costly repairs.
