Vehicle: 2020 Volvo S60 T5 Inscription

Hi all,

I've noticed a concerning issue with my 2020 Volvo S60 T5 Inscription. When driving at low speeds, especially in stop-and-go traffic or accelerating from a near stop, the transmission seems to hesitate and sometimes shudders. It's not a violent jerk, but it's definitely noticeable and feels like the car is struggling to find the right gear.

It's got about 45,000 miles on it. I've heard about some transmission issues with the Aisin 8-speed in other Volvos. Is this a known problem? Are there any TSBs or software updates that might address this?

Any advice on what to tell the dealer or what to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Diagnose the Issue: The symptoms you describe – hesitation and shudder at low speeds or during light acceleration – are consistent with common complaints related to the Aisin 8-speed automatic transmission (AWF8F35/AWF8F45) used in many Volvo models, including your 2020 S60 T5. This often manifests as a feeling of 'lugging' or a slight delay in gear engagement.

  2. Check for OBD Codes: While this issue might not always trigger a Check Engine Light, it's possible for the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to store fault codes. A general transmission malfunction code like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific codes related to gear ratio errors or shift solenoid performance could be present. A professional scan tool can read these specific Volvo DTCs.

  3. Causes: The primary causes for this type of behavior often include:

    • Transmission Fluid Degradation: Over time, transmission fluid can lose its lubricating properties, leading to less smooth shifts.
    • Software Glitches: The transmission control software might have bugs or require updates to optimize shift points and clutch engagement.
    • Valve Body Issues: Less commonly, issues with the transmission's valve body can cause inconsistent fluid pressure and shifting problems.
  4. Known TSBs/Recalls: Volvo has released several Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to transmission shifting characteristics for various models equipped with this transmission. These TSBs often recommend software updates for the TCM and, in some cases, a transmission fluid flush and refill with specific Volvo-approved fluid. It's crucial to check if your VIN is covered by any relevant TSBs.

  5. When to See a Shop: You should take your S60 to a Volvo dealership or a specialist immediately. Explain the symptoms clearly. Request them to:

    • Check for any stored transmission fault codes.
    • Verify if there are any outstanding software updates for the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
    • Inspect the transmission fluid condition and level. They may recommend a transmission fluid flush and refill, which can often resolve these issues. Do not delay, as prolonged operation with these symptoms could potentially lead to more severe transmission wear.
