Vehicle: 2020 Volvo S60 T8 Recharge Inscription

Hi all,

I'm having a serious issue with my 2020 Volvo S60 T8 Recharge. This morning, I went to start it, and absolutely nothing happened. The dashboard displayed a message saying "Immobilizer See Manual" and it won't even crank. All the other electronics seem to be working – lights, radio, infotainment – but the car is just dead when I try to start it.

I've tried both key fobs, and replaced the battery in the primary one, but it made no difference. The 12V battery in the car itself is relatively new, and I don't think it's completely dead since other things are powering up.

Could this be a software glitch, or something more serious with the immobilizer system? Any ideas on what I should check before calling for a tow?

The "Immobilizer See Manual" message on your 2020 Volvo S60 T8 Recharge indicates that the vehicle's anti-theft system is preventing the engine from starting. This is a critical safety feature, but it can be frustrating when it malfunctions. Here's what you should investigate:

  1. Check 12V Battery Health: Even if other electronics work, a weak 12V battery can cause issues with complex electronic systems like the immobilizer. Use a multimeter to check the voltage of your 12V battery. It should be at least 12.6 volts when the car is off. If it's lower, try a jump start or trickle charge to see if the immobilizer system resets.
  2. Key Fob and Antenna Issues: Although you tried both fobs and replaced a battery, ensure the car is properly recognizing the key. Sometimes, interference or a faulty key fob antenna in the car can prevent communication. Try placing the key fob in the designated backup reader area (usually in the center console or cup holder) and attempt to start the car.
  3. Inspect Fuses: Check the fuses related to the immobilizer system, engine control unit (ECU), and starter. Consult your owner's manual for the exact fuse box locations and relevant fuse numbers. A blown fuse can interrupt power to essential components.
  4. Steering Lock Module (SCL): In some Volvo models, a faulty Steering Lock Module can trigger immobilizer warnings and prevent starting. If this module fails, it won't disengage, and the car won't allow ignition.
  5. Error Code Scan: While it's a no-start, some advanced OBD-II scanners can still communicate with various modules (like the BCM or CEM) to pull specific immobilizer-related codes (U-codes or B-codes) that might not be generic P-codes. This could provide a more precise diagnostic direction.

Common Causes for Immobilizer Issues:

  • Low 12V battery voltage.
  • Key fob communication failure (dead fob battery, faulty fob, or car's antenna issue).
  • Faulty Steering Lock Module (SCL).
  • Wiring issues or blown fuses related to the immobilizer or ECM.
  • Software glitches in the Central Electronic Module (CEM) or Engine Control Module (ECM).

When to See a Shop:

  • If basic battery checks and key fob troubleshooting don't resolve the issue.
  • If you suspect a faulty Steering Lock Module or other component failures within the immobilizer system.
  • If an advanced scan tool is needed to pull specific immobilizer fault codes or to perform module resets/reprogramming, which typically requires dealer-level diagnostic equipment (VIDA/DiCE).
