2020 S90 T6 - Front Parking Sensors Malfunctioning After Car Wash

Vehicle: 2020 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription

I'm having trouble with the front parking assist sensors on my 2020 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription. After going through an automatic car wash, they've completely stopped working correctly. They either constantly beep as if there's an obstruction when there isn't, or they don't detect anything at all. The rear sensors seem to be functioning perfectly fine.

I've tried cleaning them thoroughly with a microfiber cloth, thinking maybe some residue from the car wash was interfering, but the problem persists. It's really frustrating because I rely on them for tight parking spots. Could water have gotten into something, or is a sensor damaged?

It's quite common for parking assist sensors to act up after a car wash, especially if high-pressure water is used. The symptoms you describe – constant beeping or no detection – point towards either a sensor issue, wiring problem, or moisture interference.

  1. Thorough Drying and Inspection: Even after wiping, water can remain in crevices or behind the sensor housing. Allow the car to sit in a dry, warm place for several hours or overnight to ensure complete drying. Re-inspect the sensors for any physical damage, cracks, or if any appear slightly dislodged from their mounting points in the bumper.
  2. Check for Obstructions: Sometimes, a small piece of debris (like a leaf or a car wash brush bristle) can get lodged in front of or around a sensor, causing false readings. Ensure the area is completely clear.
  3. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): A professional diagnostic scan tool (like Volvo's VIDA) can read specific fault codes related to the Park Assist Module (PAM). Codes such as:
    • B1B70: Front Left Outer Sensor Fault
    • B1B71: Front Left Inner Sensor Fault
    • ... (and similar for other front sensors)
    • U0121: Lost Communication with ABS Control Module (can affect sensor data) These codes will pinpoint which specific sensor, if any, is causing the issue.
  4. Wiring and Connectors: High-pressure water can sometimes force its way into electrical connectors, causing corrosion or short circuits. A technician would inspect the wiring harness leading to the front sensors and the PAM for any signs of water intrusion or damage.
  5. Sensor Failure: If moisture has permanently damaged a sensor's internal electronics, or if a sensor was physically damaged by the car wash, it will need replacement.

Causes:

  • Moisture ingress into sensor housing or connectors.
  • Physical damage to a sensor (e.g., dislodged, cracked).
  • Debris blocking a sensor's field of view.
  • Corroded wiring or connectors.
  • Rarely, a software glitch in the Park Assist Module.

When to See a Shop: If thorough drying and cleaning don't resolve the problem within a day or two, it's best to take your S90 to a Volvo dealership or a reputable independent shop. They can perform a diagnostic scan to identify specific faulty sensors, physically inspect the wiring and connections, and if necessary, replace and calibrate any damaged sensors. Proper calibration is crucial for accurate parking assist functionality.
