Vehicle: 2020 Volvo XC90 T6

Hello Volvo community,

I'm having a major problem with my 2020 Volvo XC90 T6. This morning, it just wouldn't start. It cranks strongly, so I don't think it's the battery, but the engine just won't catch and fire up. There are no warning lights on the dash, which is even more confusing.

I tried locking and unlocking it a few times, and even tried a different key fob, but no luck. It was running perfectly fine yesterday. Has anyone experienced a similar no-start condition with their newer XC90? Could it be a fuel pump issue, or maybe something with the immobilizer system?

Any ideas or troubleshooting steps I can try before calling for a tow would be greatly appreciated!

A 'cranks but no start' condition on your 2020 Volvo XC90 T6 can be frustrating, especially without dashboard warnings. This typically points to a lack of fuel, spark, or proper air/timing. Here's what to investigate:

  1. Check Fuel System:

    • Cause: The engine isn't getting fuel. This could be a faulty fuel pump, a blown fuel pump fuse, or a bad fuel pump relay.
    • Action: Listen for a faint whirring sound from the rear of the vehicle for a few seconds when you first open the driver's door or press the start button (without pressing the brake). This indicates the fuel pump priming. Check the relevant fuses in the fuse box (consult your owner's manual for location).
  2. Ignition System (Spark):

    • Cause: While less common for a sudden total no-start without codes, a critical sensor like the crankshaft position sensor could prevent spark.
    • Action: This is harder to check without a scanner. If you have access to an OBD-II scanner, check for any pending codes, even if the CEL isn't on.
  3. Immobilizer System:

    • Cause: If the car's immobilizer doesn't recognize the key, it will prevent the engine from starting, even if it cranks.
    • Action: You've already tried a different key, which is good. Look for any specific immobilizer warning lights (often a key symbol) on the dash during the start attempt. Sometimes, a weak key fob battery can interfere, though usually, it would give a 'key not detected' message.
  4. Engine Control Module (ECM) or Software Glitch:

    • Cause: Modern Volvos are heavily reliant on software. A rare ECM glitch could prevent proper engine management.
    • Action: Disconnecting the battery for 15-30 minutes (negative terminal first) can sometimes reset modules, but be aware this might require re-entering radio codes or resetting windows.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked the fuel pump sound and fuses without success, or if you suspect an immobilizer issue, it's time to call for a tow to a Volvo specialist. They have the VIDA diagnostic system to communicate with all vehicle modules and pinpoint the exact cause of the no-start condition.
