Vehicle: 2021 Volvo V60 Cross Country

My 2021 Volvo V60 Cross Country's Sensus infotainment screen has started acting up. Sometimes it freezes completely, other times it goes black for a few seconds before restarting, and occasionally it just stays black until I restart the car.

It's really disruptive, especially when using navigation or trying to adjust climate controls. I've tried doing a soft reset (holding the home button), but the problem keeps coming back.

Is this a known issue with the Sensus system in these newer models? Could it be a software bug, or is the hardware failing?

Intermittent freezing and black screens on your 2021 Volvo V60 Cross Country's Sensus system are frustrating and can stem from a few common electrical and software issues.

  1. Software Update: The most frequent cause for these symptoms in newer Volvo models is outdated or corrupted Sensus software. Volvo regularly releases updates that address bugs, improve stability, and enhance performance. Even if you've had recent service, a specific infotainment update might be pending.
  2. Sensus Module Glitch/Failure: The Sensus Infotainment Control Module (ICM) itself can sometimes develop internal faults. While a soft reset (holding the home button for 20 seconds) often helps with temporary glitches, persistent issues might indicate a failing module. Overheating can also contribute to this.
  3. Wiring or Connection Issues: Less common, but a loose or corroded connection to the Sensus screen or the main infotainment module could cause intermittent power or data loss, leading to freezing or blackouts. This would typically require a physical inspection.
  4. Power Supply Issue: A fluctuating power supply to the Sensus system, perhaps due to a minor electrical fault elsewhere, could also cause instability.

When to see a shop: Since you've already tried a soft reset and the problem persists, your best course of action is to schedule an appointment with a Volvo dealership. They can connect your vehicle to their diagnostic system (VIDA) to:

  • Check for and install the latest Sensus software updates.
  • Read any specific fault codes related to the infotainment system.
  • Diagnose if the Sensus module itself is faulty and requires replacement. This is often covered under warranty for a 2021 model.
