Vehicle: 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin

Hi everyone,

I'm having a problem with the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) on my 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin. A warning light for the EPB has come on, and sometimes when I try to engage or disengage it, it either doesn't respond or takes several attempts. Other times, it engages fine but the light stays on.

I've tried restarting the car, but the light usually comes back on. I'm concerned about driving it if the parking brake could suddenly engage or fail to release. Has anyone else with an XC40 Recharge experienced this, or similar issues with a Volvo EPB system?

Is there a quick reset or something I can check, or is this definitely a dealership visit? Any advice would be helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An illuminated Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light and intermittent functionality on your 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge indicates a fault within the system. This is a safety-critical component, so it's important to address it promptly.

Common Causes:

  1. Faulty EPB Motor/Actuator: Each rear brake caliper has an integrated electric motor that actuates the parking brake. These motors can fail internally or become seized, preventing proper engagement/disengagement. This is a very common failure point.
  2. Wiring or Connector Issues: Damage to the wiring harness leading to the EPB motors or corrosion in the connectors can interrupt communication or power, causing faults. This can sometimes trigger codes like C0040 (Brake Pedal Position Sensor Circuit 'A' Malfunction) if related to brake pedal input, or more specific EPB module communication codes.
  3. Brake Pedal Switch: The brake pedal position switch tells the EPB module when the brake pedal is depressed. If this switch is faulty, the EPB system might not receive the correct input, leading to malfunctions.
  4. EPB Control Module: Less common, but the electronic control module that manages the EPB system can develop internal faults.
  5. Low Battery Voltage: Sometimes, critical electronic systems can throw intermittent errors if the 12V auxiliary battery is weak or failing.

What to Check/Do (Limited DIY):

  1. Check 12V Battery: Ensure your 12V auxiliary battery is in good health. A weak battery can cause various electronic glitches.
  2. Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious signs of damage to the EPB motors on the rear calipers or their wiring. However, often the fault is internal.

When to See a Shop:

Given the complexity and safety implications of the EPB system, it's strongly recommended to take your XC40 Recharge to a Volvo dealership or a specialized shop immediately. They have the diagnostic tools (VIDA system) to read specific Volvo fault codes from the EPB module, which will accurately pinpoint the problem. Attempting to force the EPB or driving with a known fault can lead to further damage or, more importantly, a safety hazard. Do not delay in getting this inspected.
