Vehicle: 2021 Volvo XC90 T6 Inscription

Hi all,

I'm having some concerning issues with my 2021 Volvo XC90 T6, which has about 40,000 miles on it. Recently, the transmission has started shifting really hard, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes from 3rd to 4th. It's a noticeable jolt, and it's not smooth at all. On top of that, a transmission system warning light popped up on the dashboard.

I haven't pulled any specific OBD-II codes yet, as I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this with their newer XC90. The car drives, but the shifting is definitely not normal and it feels like it's struggling.

Could this be a software issue, low transmission fluid, or something more serious with the transmission itself? Any advice on what to check first would be greatly appreciated!

Hard shifting and a transmission warning light on your 2021 Volvo XC90 T6 are clear indicators of a problem that needs prompt attention. Given the newer model year, it's crucial to diagnose this accurately. Here's what you should consider:

  1. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The very first step is to use an OBD-II scanner to pull any stored transmission-related codes (P07xx series, or potentially U-codes for communication issues). These codes will provide specific clues about which sensor, solenoid, or system is malfunctioning within the transmission.
  2. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: Although many modern transmissions are considered 'sealed for life,' fluid levels can still be critical. While checking the fluid on a Volvo can be complex and often requires specific tools and procedures, a low or contaminated fluid level can cause hard shifting. If the fluid smells burnt or looks unusually dark, it's a major concern.
  3. Software Update: Modern Volvo transmissions are heavily controlled by software. A known software glitch or an outdated transmission control module (TCM) software version could be causing erratic shifting. A dealer can check for and apply any relevant software updates.
  4. Transmission Solenoids: The solenoids within the transmission control fluid flow for shifting. If one or more solenoids are faulty or sticking, it can lead to harsh shifts. OBD-II codes often point directly to specific solenoid issues.
  5. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. Problems here can cause a range of shifting issues. This is a more complex repair.

Common Causes for Hard Shifting and Transmission Warnings:

  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid.
  • Faulty transmission solenoids (shift solenoids, pressure control solenoids).
  • Issues with the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or its software.
  • Internal mechanical wear or damage within the transmission (e.g., clutch packs, valve body).
  • Sensor failures (e.g., input/output speed sensors).

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately, if the transmission warning light is illuminated and hard shifting is occurring. Continued driving could cause further damage.
  • If your OBD-II scanner reveals specific transmission codes, as these often require specialized tools and knowledge to diagnose and repair.
  • For checking transmission fluid levels and condition, as this often requires specific procedures for Volvo's 'sealed' transmissions.
  • For any software updates or reprogramming of the TCM.
  • If the issue points to internal transmission components (solenoids, valve body, clutch packs), as these repairs are complex and best left to certified Volvo technicians or transmission specialists.
