Vehicle: 2022 Volvo S90 B6

Hi everyone,

I have a 2022 Volvo S90 B6 with about 25,000 miles on it. I've noticed lately that I'm adding oil more frequently than I think I should be for a relatively new car – probably a quart every 3,000-4,000 miles. Just yesterday, I got a "Low Oil Pressure" warning light flash on for a second before disappearing while driving. The car seems to run fine otherwise, no smoke from the exhaust or strange noises.

Is this level of oil consumption normal for the B6 engine with its mild-hybrid system? The brief low oil pressure warning has me really concerned. What could be causing this, and what should my next steps be? I want to make sure I'm not damaging the engine.

Your concerns about oil consumption and, especially, a low oil pressure warning are absolutely valid and require immediate attention for your 2022 Volvo S90 B6. While some engines can consume a small amount of oil between changes, a quart every 3,000-4,000 miles on a relatively new car is on the higher side, and a low oil pressure warning is a critical sign.

Here's what could be happening:

  1. Excessive Oil Consumption:

    • PCV System: A faulty Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system can lead to increased oil consumption by allowing oil vapor to be drawn into the intake and burned.
    • Turbocharger Seals: The B6 engine is turbocharged. Worn or damaged turbocharger seals can allow oil to leak into the intake or exhaust system, leading to consumption without visible external leaks.
    • Piston Rings/Valve Seals: Less common on newer engines, but worn piston rings or valve stem seals can allow oil to enter the combustion chamber.
    • Engine Design: While Volvo engines are generally robust, some designs can have higher inherent oil consumption. However, this should be within acceptable limits.
  2. Low Oil Pressure Warning: This is the most critical symptom.

    • Low Oil Level: The most common cause is simply a critically low oil level due to consumption or a leak. This is why you're seeing the warning flash on.
    • Faulty Oil Pressure Sensor: The sensor itself could be failing, giving an inaccurate reading. However, given the oil consumption, it's less likely to be the sole cause.
    • Oil Pump Issues: A failing oil pump would directly lead to insufficient oil pressure throughout the engine.
    • Clogged Oil Pickup/Filter: A severely clogged oil pickup screen or oil filter can restrict oil flow and cause low pressure.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. A low oil pressure warning, even if momentary, can indicate a severe lack of lubrication, which can cause catastrophic engine damage quickly. Do not drive the car extensively until this is diagnosed.
  • Check your oil level right now. If it's low, add the correct specification of oil immediately. However, simply adding oil is a temporary fix if there's an underlying problem.
  • Schedule an appointment with your Volvo dealership without delay. They can perform a detailed diagnostic, check for leaks, monitor oil pressure with specialized tools, and initiate an oil consumption test if necessary. Since your car is a 2022 model, it's likely still under warranty, which is crucial for addressing these issues.
