Vehicle: 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge

My 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge is having an intermittent issue where it says "Key Fob Not Detected" when I try to start it. Sometimes it takes several tries, or I have to place the fob in the backup reader in the cup holder.

I've already replaced the battery in both key fobs, and the problem persists. It's really inconvenient and makes me worried about getting stranded.

Could this be an issue with the car's antenna, a receiver module, or something else entirely? Is there a common fix for this on the S90?

An intermittent "Key Fob Not Detected" message on your 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge, especially after replacing fob batteries, points to an issue with the vehicle's keyless entry and start system.

  1. Key Fob Battery Quality: Even new batteries can sometimes be faulty or low-quality. Ensure you're using a reputable brand (CR2032) and try another fresh battery just to rule it out completely.
  2. Vehicle's Receiver Antennas: Your S90 has multiple antennas throughout the cabin that detect the key fob's signal. If one or more of these antennas are faulty, disconnected, or obstructed, it can lead to intermittent detection issues. This is a common point of failure.
  3. Central Electronic Module (CEM): The CEM is the brain of many electrical systems, including keyless entry. A software glitch or a rare hardware fault within the CEM could cause it to intermittently fail to recognize the key fob's signal.
  4. Radio Frequency Interference: While less common, strong external radio frequency interference (e.g., from nearby cell towers, power lines, or even certain aftermarket accessories in your car) can sometimes disrupt the key fob's signal.
  5. Software Update: Volvo periodically releases software updates that can address communication issues between the key fobs and the vehicle's modules.

When to see a shop: Since you've already replaced the fob batteries, the next step requires specialized diagnostic tools. You should take your S90 to a Volvo dealership. They can:

  • Check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the keyless entry system or CEM.
  • Test the functionality of the vehicle's key fob receiver antennas.
  • Perform any necessary software updates for the CEM or related modules.
  • Diagnose if a specific module (like the CEM or a keyless entry module) needs replacement. Given it's a 2022 model, this issue should likely be covered under warranty.
