Vehicle: 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Ultimate

Hello Volvo community,

I'm experiencing an issue with the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) on my 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Ultimate. For the past few days, the BLIS warning light in the side mirrors has been staying on constantly, even when there are no vehicles in my blind spot. Sometimes, it just says 'BLIS Malfunction' on the driver display.

I've checked the sensors on the rear bumper for any obvious obstructions like dirt or ice, but they seem clear. It's quite distracting and makes me question the reliability of the system. Has anyone else with a newer Volvo, especially an EV, run into this? What could be causing it?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The BLIS system in your 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge is a crucial safety feature, and a malfunction can be concerning. Here's what typically causes these issues and how to address them:

  1. Check for Obstructions:

    • Even if they appear clear, ensure the radar sensors located inside the rear bumper corners are absolutely free of dirt, mud, snow, ice, or stickers. A small obstruction can interfere with the radar signal.
  2. Perform a System Reset (Soft):

    • Sometimes, a simple restart of the vehicle can clear a temporary software glitch. Turn the car off, lock it, wait a few minutes, then restart. If the issue persists, a more formal diagnostic is needed.
  3. Look for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

    • A professional scan tool can read specific codes related to the BLIS system. Common codes include:
      • B1A00: BLIS Sensor Fault (indicates an issue with one of the radar sensors).
      • B1A01: BLIS Module Communication Error (suggests the BLIS control module isn't communicating properly).
      • B1A02: BLIS Sensor Alignment Issue (less common, but can happen after an impact).

Common Causes:

  • Sensor Obstruction: The most frequent cause, even minor dirt can trigger it.
  • Software Glitch: Temporary errors in the vehicle's software.
  • Faulty Radar Sensor: One of the radar units in the bumper may have failed.
  • Wiring Damage: Damaged wiring to the BLIS sensors or control module.
  • BLIS Control Module Failure: The module itself could be faulty.

When to See a Shop:

  • If cleaning the sensors and restarting the vehicle doesn't resolve the issue.
  • If the 'BLIS Malfunction' message is persistent.
  • If you suspect physical damage to the bumper or sensors.
  • For a proper diagnostic scan to pinpoint the exact fault code and component. Given it's a 2022 model, it should still be under warranty, making a dealer visit the best course of action.
