Vehicle: 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Motor

Hey everyone,

I'm having some trouble with charging my 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge. Lately, it's been charging much slower than usual, both on my Level 2 home charger and public chargers. Even worse, sometimes I get a 'Charging Cable Fault' error message on the instrument cluster, and charging stops altogether.

I've tried different cables and different chargers, but the problem persists. It's really impacting my daily commute and range anxiety. Is this a known issue with the XC40 Recharge? Could it be related to a recall or a specific component?

Any ideas or experiences would be helpful. I'm planning to take it to the dealership soon.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Experiencing slow charging and 'Charging Cable Fault' errors on your 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge is a significant concern and points to an issue within the vehicle's charging system. This is not a typical operational characteristic.

Here are the potential causes and steps:

  1. Onboard Charger (OBC) Fault: The most common culprit for these symptoms in EVs is a fault with the vehicle's onboard charger. The OBC is responsible for converting AC power from your home or public Level 2 charger into DC power to charge the battery. A failing OBC can lead to reduced charging rates or complete charging failure.
  2. Charging Port Assembly: Issues with the charging port itself, including damaged pins, loose connections, or internal sensor faults, can trigger 'Charging Cable Fault' errors. Corrosion or physical damage, even minor, can disrupt communication between the car and the charger.
  3. Battery Management System (BMS) Glitch: The BMS monitors and controls the battery charging process. A software glitch or a fault within the BMS could incorrectly interpret charging conditions, leading to slow charging or fault messages.
  4. Software Bugs: As with any complex electronic system, software bugs can sometimes cause erratic behavior. Volvo has issued software updates for its EVs that address charging performance and reliability.
  5. Charging Cable/Station Compatibility: While you've tried different cables and chargers, it's worth noting that sometimes specific combinations can cause issues, though less likely if the problem is consistent across multiple setups.

Recalls/TSBs:

It's crucial to check for any open recalls or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to the charging system or onboard charger for your specific VIN. Volvo has had recalls and service actions related to high-voltage battery systems and charging components in some of its early EV models. For example, some early XC40 Recharge models faced issues with the Electric Motor Control Module (EMCM) software, which could indirectly affect charging.

When to See a Shop:

This issue warrants an immediate visit to a certified Volvo EV service center. They have specialized diagnostic equipment to read fault codes from the high-voltage system and onboard charger. Look for codes like:

  • P0D26: Onboard Charger Fault
  • P0AA6: Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault
  • P0C29: High Voltage Interlock Circuit Performance

Be sure to inform them of all the details, including which chargers you've used and the specific error messages. This is a safety-critical system, and proper diagnosis and repair are essential.
