Vehicle: 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8

Hi everyone, I'm having a serious issue with my 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8. I recently got a 'Reduced Performance' warning message on the dashboard, and the car went into a limp mode, significantly limiting power. The check engine light also came on, and there's a message about a 'Hybrid System Fault'.

This happened suddenly while driving on the highway. I pulled over, turned the car off and on, and the warning cleared for a bit, but then came back. The electric range is also showing zero, even after charging.

Has anyone with a 2022 XC60 Recharge or other Volvo PHEV experienced this? What was the cause? I'm concerned about driving it and plan to take it to the dealer, but I'd like to know what to expect.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Reduced Performance' warning combined with a 'Hybrid System Fault' and limp mode in your 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge T8 indicates a significant issue within the complex plug-in hybrid system. This is a critical warning and should be addressed immediately.

  1. Common Causes:

    • High Voltage Battery Fault: Issues with the high-voltage battery pack, including cell degradation, internal short circuits, or problems with the Battery Management System (BMS), can trigger these warnings. DTCs like P0A7A (Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage Variation) or P0AFA (Hybrid Battery System Voltage Low) are common.
    • Hybrid System Inverter/Converter: The inverter converts DC battery power to AC for the electric motor, and the converter manages voltage levels. A fault in either of these components can lead to a system shutdown and reduced performance. Codes such as P0A0F (Engine Failed to Start) or P0A1F (Motor Electronics Over Temperature) might appear.
    • Electric Motor Fault: Problems with the electric motor itself, such as sensor failures or internal damage, can also cause the system to fault.
    • Charging System Issues: While less likely to cause limp mode, a fault in the onboard charger or charging port can sometimes cascade into broader hybrid system errors.
    • Software Glitches: In some cases, a software bug in the hybrid control module can cause erroneous fault readings. However, given the limp mode, a physical fault is more probable.
  2. Safety First: When a 'Reduced Performance' warning appears, the vehicle's safety systems are often engaged to prevent further damage. Continuing to drive extensively in this state is not recommended.

When to See a Shop: Given the severity of the 'Reduced Performance' and 'Hybrid System Fault' warnings, you should have your 2022 XC60 Recharge towed to a Volvo dealership immediately. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair high-voltage hybrid systems yourself, as it poses significant electrical shock hazards. Volvo technicians have specialized training, tools (VIDA), and safety equipment to diagnose and repair these complex systems. Your vehicle is still under warranty, so these repairs should be covered.
