Vehicle: 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge

Hi everyone, I'm having an issue with my 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge. After a heavy rainstorm yesterday, my front and rear parking sensors started acting up. They're either constantly beeping as if there's an obstacle, or they don't detect anything at all when I'm clearly close to something.

I've tried wiping them clean, but it hasn't helped. Is this a common issue with water ingress, or could it be a more serious module problem? No dash warnings yet, just the erratic behavior.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Sensor Contamination/Water: The most common cause for erratic parking sensor behavior, especially after rain, is water or debris interfering with the ultrasonic waves. Even if wiped, water might be trapped around the sensor housing or connectors. Give the vehicle a day or two to fully dry out in a warm, dry environment.
  2. Physical Damage: Inspect each sensor carefully for any visible cracks, dents, or misalignments. Even a slight impact can damage the internal transducer or its seal, allowing moisture in.
  3. Wiring and Connectors: Water ingress can corrode or short out wiring and connectors leading to the sensors or the Park Assist Module (PAM). While less common, this can happen, especially if seals are compromised.
  4. Diagnostic Scan (OBD-II): Although you might not have a dashboard warning, a professional diagnostic scan (using a tool capable of communicating with the PAM) is crucial. It will often reveal specific fault codes for individual sensors (e.g., P0571 - Cruise Control/Brake Switch 'A' Circuit, or more specific C-codes related to sensor faults like C1XXX for Parking Aid Sensor faults). This helps pinpoint which sensor or circuit is problematic.
  5. Module Failure: In rarer cases, the Park Assist Module itself could be failing, particularly if it's exposed to moisture. However, this is usually accompanied by more widespread issues or persistent error messages.
  6. When to See a Shop: If the problem persists after the vehicle has thoroughly dried out, or if a visual inspection reveals no obvious issues, it's time to visit a Volvo service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools to test individual sensors, check wiring continuity, and diagnose the Park Assist Module. Early diagnosis can prevent potential damage to other electrical components.
