Vehicle: 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Ultimate

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an intermittent issue with the BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert on my 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Ultimate. Occasionally, I'll get a 'BLIS Service Required' message on the dashboard, and both systems will stop working. It seems to happen randomly, not necessarily after rain or washing the car.

Sometimes, after turning the car off and on again, it clears up, but it always comes back eventually. It's quite frustrating, especially when trying to change lanes or back out of a parking spot. I've tried wiping down the rear bumper where the sensors are, but that hasn't made a difference.

Has anyone else with a newer S60 or other Volvo experienced this? Is this a known software glitch, or could it be a sensor issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating intermittent fault in your 2023 Volvo S60 Recharge Ultimate's advanced driver-assistance systems. The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) rely on radar sensors typically located in the rear bumper corners. When these systems malfunction, it can be due to several electrical or sensor-related issues.

Here are the common causes for such errors:

  1. Obstructed Sensors: While you've wiped them down, sometimes even a thin layer of dirt, ice, or snow can interfere with the radar signals. Ensure the entire area around the rear bumper corners is clear.
  2. Wiring Issues: The wiring harnesses connecting the radar sensors to the main control module can develop faults, such as corrosion, loose connections, or even minor damage. This often leads to intermittent operation.
  3. Software Glitch: Modern Volvo vehicles are heavily reliant on software. A temporary software bug or a need for an update could cause these systems to become unresponsive or report errors. This is a common fix for many electronic issues.
  4. Faulty Radar Sensor Module: One of the radar sensor modules itself could be failing. These modules are complex electronic components, and internal failures can lead to the 'Service Required' message. A diagnostic scan might reveal specific codes like B1A00 (BLIS Sensor Malfunction) or similar manufacturer-specific codes.
  5. Control Module Issues: Less commonly, the main control module that processes the BLIS/RCTA data could be at fault.

What to do:

  • Thorough Cleaning: Double-check the rear bumper corners for any subtle obstructions or damage.
  • Check for Recalls/TSBs: Inquire with your Volvo dealer if there are any active software updates or Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to BLIS/RCTA issues for your specific model year.

When to see a shop:

Given the intermittent nature and the 'Service Required' message, your best course of action is to schedule an appointment with a Volvo dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools (VIDA system) that can read specific fault codes from the BLIS control modules, perform software updates, and accurately pinpoint whether the issue is a sensor, wiring, or a software-related problem. Attempting to diagnose complex ADAS issues yourself can be challenging and may not resolve the root cause.
