Vehicle: 2022 Volvo XC60 B5 Core

Hello all,

I'm having an issue with my 2022 Volvo XC60 B5 Core. This morning, both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning lights illuminated on my dashboard. There's also a message saying 'Brake System Service Required'.

The brakes seem to be working, but I haven't tried any hard braking to test the ABS. I'm worried about driving it like this, especially with winter coming up. I checked the brake fluid, and it looks fine.

Has anyone experienced this with a newer Volvo XC60? Could it be a simple sensor issue, or something more serious? I'm hoping it's not a major repair on such a new car. Any insights or common OBD codes associated with this would be helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and ESC warning lights illuminate, it indicates a fault within the vehicle's braking and stability control systems. This often points to a shared component failure, most commonly a wheel speed sensor. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Common Causes for ABS/ESC Lights:

    • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails (due to dirt, damage, or electrical fault), the ABS/ESC module loses critical data, triggering both lights. Common OBD codes associated with this include C0031-C0034 (for specific wheel speed sensor faults).
    • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair.
    • Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors to the wheel speed sensors or ABS module can also cause these lights to come on.
    • Brake Fluid Level/Pressure Sensor: While you checked the fluid, a faulty brake fluid level sensor or a brake pressure sensor could also trigger these warnings.
    • Steering Angle Sensor: The ESC system relies on the steering angle sensor. A fault here can also trigger the ESC light, and sometimes the ABS light as well.
  2. Diagnosis:

    • The first step is to connect an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS/ESC specific codes (not just generic engine codes). This will pinpoint the exact fault, often indicating which wheel speed sensor is faulty (e.g., C0031 for front left).
    • A mechanic will then visually inspect the sensor and its wiring for damage or corrosion. They may also test the sensor's resistance or signal output.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • You should have your 2022 Volvo XC60 inspected by a professional mechanic immediately. While your regular brakes may still function, the ABS and ESC systems are crucial safety features that are disabled when these lights are on. This means your vehicle will not have anti-lock braking or electronic stability control, which can significantly increase stopping distances and the risk of losing control, especially in adverse weather conditions. Do not delay this repair.
