Vehicle: 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 R-Design

My 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 R-Design suddenly has both the ABS and Traction Control lights illuminated on the dashboard. This happened yesterday after I hit a small pothole, but it wasn't a huge impact.

I haven't noticed any major changes in braking performance, but the cruise control isn't working now, which I understand is often linked to these systems. I tried scanning for generic OBD-II codes, but nothing came up.

What could be the culprit here? Is it possible a sensor got knocked loose, or could it be something more serious? Any advice on what I can check?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The simultaneous illumination of the ABS and Traction Control lights, especially after hitting a pothole, strongly suggests an issue with one of the wheel speed sensors or its wiring. The cruise control system relies on accurate wheel speed data, so its disablement is a common symptom.

Common Causes:

  • Wheel Speed Sensor (WSS) Failure/Damage: These sensors monitor the rotational speed of each wheel. A pothole could have damaged a sensor, its wiring, or even dislodged it.
  • WSS Wiring Harness Issues: The wiring leading to the wheel speed sensor can become frayed, cut, or disconnected.
  • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the ABS control module itself can fail. However, a pothole impact makes a sensor issue more likely.
  • Tone Ring Damage: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed ring that the WSS reads. Damage to this ring can also cause incorrect readings.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Visual Inspection of Wheel Speed Sensors and Wiring: Carefully inspect each wheel speed sensor (located near the wheel hub/brake caliper) and its wiring harness. Look for any signs of physical damage, cuts, fraying, or loose connections. Pay extra attention to the wheel that might have hit the pothole.
  2. Check for Debris: Sometimes, road debris can get lodged near a sensor, interfering with its reading. Clean the area around the sensors.
  3. Brake Fluid Level: While less likely to cause ABS/TC lights directly without other brake warnings, ensure your brake fluid reservoir is at the correct level.

When to See a Shop:

  • If a visual inspection doesn't reveal any obvious damage or loose connections.
  • If you're unable to access or properly inspect the sensors yourself.
  • A professional diagnosis using Volvo-specific diagnostic tools (like VIDA) is highly recommended. These tools can read specific ABS/Traction Control system codes (which generic OBD-II scanners often miss) that will pinpoint exactly which sensor or component is faulty. This will prevent unnecessary parts replacement.
  • While braking performance might seem normal, the ABS and Traction Control systems are safety features. It's best to have them fully functional.
