Vehicle: 2020 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to do my first DIY oil change on my 2020 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum. It's got about 45,000 miles on it now, and I usually take it to the dealer, but I want to start doing some basic maintenance myself to save a few bucks and learn more about my car.

Can anyone tell me what specific oil type (viscosity and spec) and oil filter I should be using? I've heard conflicting things about needing a specific Volvo spec. Also, any tips or tricks for getting to the filter or draining the oil would be super helpful. Is there a special tool for the filter cap?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Performing your own oil change on a Volvo XC60 is a great way to save money and understand your vehicle better. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Oil Specification: For your 2020 Volvo XC60 T5, you will need engine oil that meets Volvo VCC RBS0-2AE specification. This is typically a 0W-20 full synthetic oil. Using oil that does not meet this specific Volvo standard can lead to premature engine wear and potential warranty issues. Always double-check your owner's manual for the most accurate and up-to-date oil specification.
  2. Oil Filter: You'll need a specific cartridge-style oil filter. Volvo recommends using genuine Volvo oil filters (part number often 31372212 or equivalent, but verify with your VIN). High-quality aftermarket filters from brands like Mann or Mahle that meet OEM specifications are also acceptable. The filter housing typically requires a 36mm socket for removal.
  3. Capacity: The 2.0L T5 engine usually takes around 5.6-5.7 liters (approx. 5.9-6.0 quarts) of oil. Always add slightly less than the full capacity, then check the electronic dipstick (via the Sensus infotainment system) and top up as needed.
  4. Tools & Tips:
    • You'll need a 36mm socket for the oil filter housing.
    • A drain pan with at least 7-quart capacity.
    • A new drain plug washer (crush washer) is highly recommended every time.
    • The drain plug is usually a 17mm or 19mm bolt on the oil pan.
    • Ensure the engine is warm but not hot when draining the oil for better flow.
  5. Resetting Service Reminder: After the oil change, you'll need to reset the service reminder message in your car's infotainment system. The procedure usually involves holding down the trip odometer reset button while turning the ignition on, then waiting for the service light to flash and release.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you encounter any difficulty removing the oil filter housing or drain plug, or if they appear stripped.
  • If you notice any unusual leaks after the oil change.
  • If the service reminder light does not reset properly after multiple attempts.
  • If you prefer to have a professional ensure the correct oil and filter are used and the service is logged appropriately for warranty purposes.
