Vehicle: 2017 Volvo XC60 T5 Inscription

Hey everyone,

I'm having an intermittent issue with the electronic parking brake on my 2017 Volvo XC60 T5. It has about 70,000 miles. Sometimes, when I try to engage or disengage the parking brake, I get a 'Parking Brake Malfunction' warning on the dashboard. Other times, it works perfectly fine. It's really unpredictable.

I've tried restarting the car, but the warning sometimes persists. I'm worried it might fail completely or get stuck. Has anyone experienced this with their XC60? Is there a common fix or something I should be looking out for? I'm not sure if this is an electrical glitch or a mechanical problem.

Thanks for any advice!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An intermittent 'Parking Brake Malfunction' warning on your 2017 Volvo XC60 is a common issue with electronic parking brake (EPB) systems and should be investigated to prevent potential safety or operational problems.

  1. Common Causes of EPB Malfunction:

    • Low Battery Voltage: Volvo's sophisticated electronic systems are very sensitive to battery voltage. A weak or failing 12V battery can cause various seemingly unrelated electrical warnings, including EPB malfunctions. This is a very common cause.
    • EPB Motor/Actuator Failure: Each rear brake caliper has an electric motor that operates the parking brake. These motors can fail due to wear, corrosion, or electrical issues. If one motor is faulty, it can trigger a system-wide warning.
    • Wiring/Connector Issues: Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring and connectors to the EPB motors or the control module can cause intermittent communication errors.
    • EPB Control Module Failure: Less common, but the electronic control unit (ECU) for the parking brake system can sometimes malfunction.
    • Brake Fluid Level: While less direct, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger various brake-related warnings.
  2. What You Can Do:

    • Check Battery: Have your car's 12V battery tested at an auto parts store. If it's weak, replacing it might resolve the issue.
    • Check Brake Fluid: Ensure your brake fluid reservoir is at the correct level.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • As soon as possible: An intermittent EPB warning can become a permanent failure, potentially leaving you unable to engage or disengage the parking brake. This can be a safety concern.
    • A professional Volvo technician will be able to connect to your vehicle's diagnostic system and retrieve specific fault codes related to the EPB. Common OBD/Volvo-specific codes might include:
      • P0504: Brake Switch 'A'/'B' Correlation (less likely for EPB motor, but can be related to brake pedal input)
      • C0031-C0035: Related to wheel speed sensor issues, which can sometimes impact EPB if the system relies on speed input.
      • Specific Volvo codes (e.g., BCM-C00XX, CEM-U0XXX): These will directly point to issues with the EPB motors, wiring, or control module.
    • They can then diagnose whether it's a battery issue, a faulty EPB motor, wiring problem, or control module failure and perform the necessary repairs, which often involves replacing the affected EPB motor/caliper assembly.
