Vehicle: 2020 Volvo XC60 T6

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a persistent clunking noise coming from the front suspension of my 2020 Volvo XC60 T6. It's most noticeable when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or just uneven road surfaces. It sounds like something is loose or worn out.

My XC60 has about 65,000 miles on it now. I'm wondering if this is a common issue for this model year or if anyone else has experienced something similar. It doesn't seem to affect steering much, but the noise is definitely concerning.

Has anyone dealt with this before? What were the culprits, and what was the fix? Any advice on what to check first would be greatly appreciated before I take it into the dealership.

Hello Mark,

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2020 Volvo XC60 T6 at 65,000 miles is a common complaint and typically indicates wear in one or more suspension components. It's important to address this promptly as worn suspension parts can affect handling, tire wear, and overall safety.

Here are the most common causes and recommended steps:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very frequent cause of clunking noises. They connect the sway bar to the control arm or strut. The bushings or ball joints within the links can wear out, leading to play and noise, especially over bumps or when turning. They are relatively inexpensive to replace.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The front lower and upper control arm bushings can deteriorate over time, allowing excessive movement. This can manifest as a clunking sound, particularly during acceleration, braking, or when hitting bumps. A visual inspection might reveal cracks or tears in the rubber.
  3. Strut Mounts or Bearings: The strut mounts, which attach the top of the strut assembly to the vehicle's chassis, can wear out. The bearing within the mount allows the strut to rotate with steering input. If these fail, you can hear a clunk or a popping sound, especially when turning the steering wheel or going over bumps.
  4. Ball Joints: The lower ball joint (connecting the control arm to the steering knuckle) is another potential culprit. Wear in this component can cause a clunking noise and, if severe, can lead to dangerous handling issues.
  5. Tie Rod Ends: While less common for a general clunk over bumps, worn inner or outer tie rod ends can also contribute to front-end noise and loose steering.

Diagnostic Steps You Can Take:

  • Visual Inspection: With the car safely on jack stands, inspect all rubber bushings (sway bar, control arms) for cracks, tears, or signs of dry rot. Check sway bar end links for play.
  • Shake Test: Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then 3 and 9 o'clock, and try to rock it. Any significant play could indicate worn ball joints or wheel bearings (though wheel bearings usually hum or growl, not clunk).
  • Listen Carefully: Try to pinpoint the side (driver or passenger) and general area where the sound is loudest.

When to See a Shop:

It's highly recommended to have a professional technician inspect your XC60. Suspension components are critical for vehicle safety and require specific tools and expertise for proper diagnosis and replacement. A shop can perform a thorough multi-point inspection, including a suspension 'shake down' test, to accurately identify the source of the clunking. Continuing to drive with significantly worn suspension components can lead to further damage, compromised handling, and potentially dangerous situations.
