Intermittent Headlight Flickering on 2016 V60 T5 - DRLs Affected Too

Vehicle: 2016 Volvo V60 T5 Cross Country

I've noticed an annoying and somewhat concerning issue with the headlights on my 2016 Volvo V60 T5 Cross Country. They occasionally flicker, especially the low beams, and sometimes even the daytime running lights (DRLs) seem to dim or flicker as well. It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently now, and I'm worried about visibility at night.

I've checked the bulbs visually, and they seem fine – no obvious signs of burning out. I'm not sure if this is a bulb issue, a wiring problem, or something more complex with the electrical system. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Intermittent flickering of headlights and DRLs on your 2016 Volvo V60 can be a safety concern and points to an electrical issue. Given that both low beams and DRLs are affected, it suggests a common point of failure rather than just a single bulb.

  1. Bulb Type and Ballast/Driver: Your 2016 V60 likely uses either Halogen, Xenon (HID), or LED headlights. If it has Xenon (HID) lights, flickering is a classic symptom of a failing ballast (the component that provides high voltage to ignite the bulb). If it's LED, the LED driver module could be failing. Even if the bulb 'looks' fine, internal components or the gas inside HID bulbs can degrade.
  2. Wiring and Connectors: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the headlight assemblies. Look for any signs of corrosion, fraying, or loose connections. Moisture ingress into the headlight housing or connectors can also cause intermittent issues.
  3. Central Electronic Module (CEM): The CEM is responsible for controlling many electrical functions, including lighting. A fault within the CEM or its software could cause erratic behavior. Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to lighting circuits (e.g., B1001-B100F for various lighting faults) might be stored.
  4. Battery and Alternator Check: While less likely to cause isolated flickering, a weak battery or an alternator that isn't providing stable voltage can sometimes manifest in electrical anomalies. Have your battery and charging system tested.

Causes:

  • Failing HID ballast or LED driver module.
  • Degrading HID bulb (even if not fully out).
  • Corroded or loose wiring/connectors in the headlight circuit.
  • Faulty headlight switch or stalk (less common for both DRLs and low beams).
  • Software glitch or internal fault within the CEM.

When to See a Shop: If you're not comfortable with electrical testing or identifying specific components like ballasts/drivers, it's best to take your V60 to a Volvo dealership or a qualified independent mechanic. They can accurately diagnose the issue by reading fault codes, testing voltage and current at the headlight assemblies, and performing component-level checks. This will ensure proper repair and restore safe illumination for your vehicle.
