Vehicle: 2022 Volvo XC90 B6 Inscription

Hello Volvo community,

I've got a 2022 Volvo XC90 B6 Inscription, and lately, I've noticed a really unpleasant musty, damp smell coming from the AC vents, especially when I first turn it on. It's also felt like the airflow isn't as strong as it used to be, even on higher fan settings.

The car has about 30,000 miles on it. I'm wondering if this could be a clogged cabin air filter? I haven't changed it since I bought the car. Is this a common issue with the XC90s, and is it something I can easily replace myself? Any tips for dealing with the smell?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, Emily, a musty smell and reduced airflow in your 2022 Volvo XC90 B6 are classic symptoms of a clogged cabin air filter. At 30,000 miles, it's definitely due for a replacement, especially if it's never been changed. Volvo typically recommends replacing the cabin air filter every 15,000-20,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first, depending on driving conditions.

Here's how to address it:

  1. Cabin Air Filter Replacement:

    • Location: On most XC90s, the cabin air filter is located behind the glove box. You'll typically need to remove a few screws and possibly unclip the glove box to access the filter housing.
    • Procedure: Once accessed, slide out the old filter, noting its orientation, and insert the new one. Ensure the airflow arrow on the new filter points in the correct direction (usually towards the rear of the vehicle).
    • Benefits: A new filter will immediately improve airflow and significantly reduce the musty smell by trapping pollen, dust, and other airborne contaminants.
  2. Addressing the Musty Smell (Evaporator Cleaning):

    • The musty smell often comes from mold and mildew growth on the AC evaporator coil, which is located deep within the dashboard.
    • DIY Option: After replacing the cabin filter, you can purchase an AC evaporator cleaner spray (often called 'AC refresh' or 'odor eliminator'). These typically involve spraying a foam or mist into the AC system's intake or drain tube to kill bacteria and fungi. Follow product instructions carefully.
    • Prevention: To help prevent future mold growth, try to turn off your AC compressor (but leave the fan running) a few minutes before reaching your destination. This allows the evaporator coil to dry out, making it less hospitable for mold.
  3. Engine Air Filter: While not related to the musty smell, it's also a good idea to check your engine air filter around the same mileage. A clogged engine air filter can reduce engine performance and fuel efficiency.

When to see a shop:

If the musty smell persists after replacing the cabin filter and attempting an evaporator cleaning, or if the AC system's cooling performance is significantly degraded, it's best to have a professional Volvo technician inspect the system. They can perform a more thorough cleaning, check for refrigerant leaks, or diagnose any issues with the AC compressor or other components.
