Vehicle: 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country T5

Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing some concerning behavior with the 8-speed automatic transmission in my 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country. It has about 45,000 miles on it. Specifically, I've noticed rough or jerky shifts, particularly when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear, and sometimes a slight hesitation or 'clunk' when accelerating from a stop.

It's not constant, but it's becoming more frequent. There are no warning lights on the dash. I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger transmission problem. Has anyone else with a similar year/model V60 or other SPA platform Volvo experienced this? Are there any known TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) for transmission issues on these models?

Any advice on what to look for or suggest to the dealership would be helpful.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting, particularly on downshifts or hesitation from a stop, in a 2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country with the 8-speed automatic (AWF8F35/45) is a concern that should be addressed. While modern transmissions learn driving styles, consistent rough shifts are not normal.

Here's what could be happening and what to do:

  1. Software Adaptation/Updates: The most common cause for these symptoms in newer Volvo models is the transmission's adaptive learning software. Sometimes a reset of the transmission's adaptive values, followed by a re-learning procedure, can smooth out shifts. Volvo also frequently releases software updates for the Transmission Control Module (TCM) to refine shift logic and improve performance. This is often the first step a dealership will take.
  2. Transmission Fluid Condition: Although Volvo often states 'lifetime' fluid, severe driving conditions or manufacturing defects can lead to premature fluid degradation. While less common at 45,000 miles, checking the fluid's condition (color, smell) and level (requires specialized tools at a shop) is important. Low or contaminated fluid can cause shifting problems.
  3. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is a critical component that directs transmission fluid to engage the correct gears. Malfunctions in the solenoids or passages within the valve body can lead to erratic shifting. This is a more serious repair.
  4. Engine Mounts/Transmission Mounts: Worn engine or transmission mounts can sometimes mimic transmission issues by allowing excessive movement of the drivetrain, leading to a 'clunk' or harsh sensation during shifts or acceleration from a stop.

Known TSBs:

There have been several TSBs related to transmission software updates for the 8-speed AWF8F35/45 transmission across various Volvo models, including the V60 Cross Country, aimed at improving shift quality and addressing specific shift anomalies. Your dealership can check for any applicable TSBs for your specific VIN.

When to See a Shop:

Take your V60 Cross Country to a Volvo dealership or a reputable independent Volvo specialist as soon as possible. Clearly describe the symptoms, noting when they occur (e.g., cold start, specific gears, etc.). Request that they:

  • Check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the TCM, even if no warning lights are present.
  • Check for and apply any relevant software updates for the TCM.
  • Perform a transmission adaptive values reset and re-learn procedure.
  • Inspect transmission fluid level and condition.
  • Inspect engine and transmission mounts.

Early intervention can often resolve these issues before they escalate into more costly repairs.
