Vehicle: 2015 Volvo S60 T5 Premier

I'm experiencing some incredibly frustrating issues with the Sensus infotainment system in my 2015 Volvo S60 T5 Premier. The screen often flickers erratically, sometimes goes completely black for several seconds, and then comes back on. More recently, it's become completely unresponsive to touch inputs, making it impossible to use navigation, change radio stations, or adjust settings.

It seems to happen randomly, not tied to bumps, specific weather conditions, or even engine load. I've tried restarting the car multiple times, but the problem always returns. It's really impacting the usability of the car.

Issues with the Sensus screen flickering and becoming unresponsive are not uncommon in earlier generation Volvo models. This can be due to several factors, ranging from software glitches to hardware failures.

  1. Perform a Sensus Hard Reset: Try a hard reset of the Sensus system. In many Volvo models, this is done by pressing and holding the 'MENU' button (or 'OK' button on some trims) for about 20-30 seconds until the screen goes black and reboots. This can resolve minor software hang-ups.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Outdated infotainment software can sometimes lead to instability. Contact your Volvo dealership to see if there are any pending software updates for your Sensus system. They can connect your vehicle to their diagnostic system (VIDA) to check and apply necessary updates.
  3. Inspect Wiring and Connections: While less common for intermittent issues, a loose or corroded connection to the Sensus display unit or its control module could cause flickering. This typically requires professional inspection behind the dashboard.
  4. Consider Module Failure: If software resets and updates don't resolve the issue, the problem might lie with the Sensus display unit itself or the associated control module (often the Central Electronic Module - CEM, or a dedicated infotainment control unit). Fault codes like U0140 (Lost Communication with Body Control Module) or B11D8 (Display Unit Malfunction) might be present.

Causes:

  • Software glitches or corrupted Sensus firmware.
  • Loose or corroded electrical connections to the display or control unit.
  • Failure of the Sensus display panel itself (touch digitizer or backlight).
  • Failure of the infotainment control module or the CEM.

When to See a Shop: If a hard reset doesn't work and you've confirmed there are no pending software updates, it's time to take your S60 to a Volvo dealership or an independent specialist. They have specialized diagnostic equipment to pinpoint module failures, check for internal fault codes, and determine if a hardware replacement (e.g., the display unit or a control module) is necessary.
