Vehicle: 2019 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription

Hi all,

I've got a 2019 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription with about 55,000 miles, and I've noticed a couple of issues lately. First, the car seems to be pulling slightly to the right, requiring me to constantly correct the steering wheel. Second, I just had my tires rotated, and the technician pointed out significant uneven wear on the front tires, particularly on the outer edges.

I haven't hit any major potholes recently that I can recall. Could this be an alignment issue, or something more serious with the suspension? What should I be looking for?

Any insights would be helpful before I take it to the dealer. Thanks!

The symptoms you're describing – your 2019 Volvo S90 pulling to one side and experiencing uneven tire wear – are classic signs of an alignment issue, but can also point to underlying suspension problems. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Primary Causes:

    • Wheel Alignment: This is the most common cause. If your wheels are not properly aligned (camber, caster, and toe angles are off), it will cause the car to pull and lead to uneven tire wear. Outer edge wear often indicates excessive positive camber or toe-out. Even without hitting a major pothole, alignment can shift over time due to normal wear and tear on suspension components or minor impacts.
    • Worn Suspension Components: Worn or damaged suspension parts can directly affect alignment. These include:
      • Control Arm Bushings: Degraded bushings allow excessive movement, altering alignment angles.
      • Ball Joints: Worn ball joints introduce play, affecting steering precision and alignment.
      • Tie Rod Ends: Loose inner or outer tie rod ends can cause steering wander and uneven tire wear.
      • Struts/Shocks: While less common for pulling, severely worn struts can affect ride height and thus alignment.
    • Tire Issues: Although you had them rotated, a defective tire (e.g., a separated belt) can sometimes cause a pull. However, the uneven wear points more to an alignment or suspension issue.
    • Brake Drag: A sticking brake caliper can cause a slight drag on one wheel, leading to a pull. This would often be accompanied by heat from that wheel and potentially a burning smell.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Alignment Check: You should get a professional wheel alignment check as soon as possible. Driving with misaligned wheels not only makes the car harder to control but also rapidly destroys tires, which are expensive to replace.
    • Suspension Inspection: Before performing an alignment, a reputable shop will always inspect all suspension and steering components for wear or damage. If any worn parts are found, they must be replaced before the alignment can be performed accurately.
    • Safety and Cost: Addressing this promptly will improve your vehicle's safety, handling, and significantly extend the life of your tires. Ignoring it will lead to more costly repairs down the line.
