Vehicle: 2019 Audi A4 S-Line

My 2019 Audi A4 S-Line with about 55,000 miles just threw an EPC light, and the engine immediately started idling very roughly. It feels like it's misfiring, and there's a noticeable loss of power when I try to accelerate. The Check Engine Light also came on shortly after the EPC light.

I've heard the EPC light can mean a lot of things, but combined with the rough idle, I'm thinking it might be something with the ignition or fuel system.

What are the common causes for an EPC light and misfires on these B9 A4 2.0T engines? Is it safe to drive it to a shop like this?

ClearTheCode admin answer: The combination of an EPC (Electronic Power Control) light, Check Engine Light (CEL), rough idle, and loss of power strongly suggests an engine performance issue, most commonly a misfire or a problem affecting the engine's ability to produce power efficiently. The EPC light indicates a fault within the electronic engine management system.

Here are the most common causes for these symptoms in your 2019 Audi A4 2.0T:

  1. Ignition Coil Failure: This is a very frequent cause of misfires in Audi 2.0T engines. A failing ignition coil will prevent a spark plug from firing correctly in one or more cylinders, leading to a rough idle and power loss.
  2. Spark Plugs: Worn or fouled spark plugs can also cause misfires. If they haven't been replaced according to the maintenance schedule, they could be contributing.
  3. Fuel Injector Issues: A clogged or faulty fuel injector can prevent a cylinder from receiving adequate fuel, leading to a misfire.
  4. Carbon Buildup: Direct Injection engines like the 2.0T are susceptible to carbon buildup on the intake valves, which can restrict airflow and cause misfires, especially at idle.
  5. PCV System Fault: While often associated with oil consumption, a severe PCV system fault can sometimes lead to vacuum leaks or improper crankcase ventilation, affecting engine performance and potentially triggering misfires.
  6. Throttle Body Malfunction: Less common, but a dirty or failing electronic throttle body can cause erratic idle and power issues.

Diagnostics (OBD Codes): When the CEL and EPC lights are on, there will be stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Common codes for misfires include:

  • P030X: (e.g., P0301 for Cylinder 1 Misfire, P0302 for Cylinder 2, etc.) - Indicates a specific cylinder misfire.
  • P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected.
  • Other codes might be present depending on the root cause (e.g., P0171 for Lean Condition, P02xx for Injector Circuit).

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. Driving with a persistent misfire can damage the catalytic converter due to unburnt fuel entering the exhaust.
  • An Audi specialist can connect a diagnostic scanner to read the specific OBD-II codes, which will pinpoint the faulty cylinder or system. They can then perform tests on ignition coils, spark plugs, fuel injectors, and check for carbon buildup or vacuum leaks to accurately diagnose and repair the issue.
