Vehicle: 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV Premium Luxury

Hi all,

I've got a 2022 Cadillac Escalade ESV with the 6.2L V8, and I'm starting to hear a distinct ticking noise from the engine, especially when it's cold. It sounds like it's coming from the top end of the engine. Recently, the check engine light came on, and when I scanned it, I got a P0300 code (random/multiple cylinder misfire detected).

The truck only has about 35,000 miles on it, which seems really low for this kind of problem. I've heard about AFM/DFM lifter issues on these GM V8s, and I'm worried that's what I'm dealing with. Is this a common problem for the newer Escalades?

Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping it's not a major engine repair.

The ticking noise combined with a P0300 (random/multiple misfire) code on your 2022 Cadillac Escalade's 6.2L V8 is indeed concerning and points strongly towards issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) or Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) lifters. This is a known issue across many GM V8 engines equipped with these fuel-saving technologies.

Common Causes:

  1. AFM/DFM Lifter Failure: The hydraulic roller lifters used in AFM/DFM systems can fail due to oil pressure issues, manufacturing defects, or simply wear. When a lifter collapses or sticks, it prevents the valve from opening or closing correctly, leading to a misfire and often a distinct ticking or knocking sound.
  2. Camshaft Damage: A failed lifter can also cause damage to the camshaft lobe it rides on, exacerbating the problem.
  3. Oil Pressure Issues: Insufficient oil pressure to the lifters can contribute to their failure.

Troubleshooting Steps (Limited for owner):

  1. Check Oil Level and Quality: Ensure your engine oil is at the correct level and has been changed according to the manufacturer's schedule with the correct viscosity and Dexos-approved oil. Low or dirty oil can contribute to lifter issues.
  2. Listen Carefully: Try to pinpoint the location of the ticking. Does it get louder with RPM? Is it constant or intermittent?

When to See a Shop: Given the symptoms and the P0300 code, it is imperative to take your Escalade to a Cadillac dealership or a specialized GM repair shop immediately. This is not a problem that will resolve itself and can lead to significant engine damage if ignored. A professional technician will need to:

  • Perform a detailed diagnostic scan to identify specific misfiring cylinders (even with P0300, individual cylinder misfire counts are often logged).
  • Conduct a cylinder leak-down test or compression test to confirm valve train issues.
  • Potentially remove the valve covers to visually inspect the lifters and rocker arms.
  • If lifter failure is confirmed, it often requires significant engine work, potentially including lifter replacement, camshaft inspection/replacement, and other related components. Since your vehicle is relatively new, it should still be under the factory powertrain warranty, making dealership service the most advisable route.
