Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport

Hey everyone,

My 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport has developed a really rough idle lately. It feels like the engine is shaking more than usual, especially when I'm stopped at a light. The check engine light came on yesterday, and I'm a bit worried.

I haven't noticed any significant loss of power while driving, but the shaking is definitely concerning. I had the spark plugs replaced about 20,000 miles ago during a routine service. Could it be something simple like a bad coil pack, or something more serious?

Any insights or similar experiences with your G70s would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealer. Thanks!

It sounds like your 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T is experiencing a common issue related to engine misfires, which can definitely cause a rough idle and trigger the Check Engine Light (CEL). The shaking you describe is a classic symptom of one or more cylinders not firing correctly. Given your recent spark plug replacement, we can start by looking at other potential culprits.

Here are the common causes and steps you can take:

  1. Retrieve OBD-II Codes: The first and most crucial step is to get the exact diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from your vehicle's onboard computer. A P030x code (e.g., P0301 for cylinder 1 misfire, P0300 for random misfire) is highly likely. Many auto parts stores offer free code reading services.
  2. Inspect Ignition Coils: Even with new spark plugs, an ignition coil can fail. A failing coil will prevent a spark from reaching the plug, causing a misfire. If you have a P030x code, you can sometimes swap the coil from the misfiring cylinder to a known good cylinder and see if the misfire code follows the coil.
  3. Check for Vacuum Leaks: A vacuum leak can introduce unmetered air into the engine, leading to a lean condition and misfires, especially at idle. Listen for hissing sounds under the hood and visually inspect vacuum lines for cracks or disconnections.
  4. Fuel System Issues: Less common, but a clogged fuel injector for a specific cylinder could also cause a misfire. You might try a high-quality fuel system cleaner, though this is often a preventative measure rather than a fix for a severe misfire.
  5. GDI Carbon Buildup: Genesis's GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines are susceptible to carbon buildup on the intake valves over time. This buildup restricts airflow and can lead to misfires, especially as the vehicle ages. While 2020 is relatively new, driving habits can accelerate this.

When to see a shop:

  • If the misfire is severe, causing significant power loss, or if the CEL is flashing (indicating a severe misfire that could damage the catalytic converter).
  • If you retrieve multiple misfire codes (P0300, P0301, P0302, etc.) across several cylinders.
  • If basic diagnostics (checking coils, vacuum lines) don't resolve the issue.
  • If the codes point to more complex issues like fuel pressure problems, sensor failures, or if carbon cleaning is suspected. A professional technician can perform advanced diagnostics, including compression tests, fuel pressure tests, and scope analysis, to pinpoint the exact cause and recommend appropriate repairs like walnut blasting for carbon buildup.
