Vehicle: 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some frustrating issues with my 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport lately. Over the past week, I've noticed a rough idle, especially when the engine is warm. It feels like a slight vibration and the RPMs fluctuate a bit.

Yesterday, the check engine light came on, and I also felt a distinct misfire while accelerating on the highway. It wasn't constant, but definitely noticeable. I haven't had a chance to get it scanned yet, but I'm worried it could be something serious.

Has anyone else with a G70 3.3T experienced similar problems? Any ideas on what might be causing this before I take it to the dealership? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Experiencing a rough idle and misfire with a Check Engine Light (CEL) on your 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T is a common concern that points directly to the engine's combustion process. The CEL is almost certainly indicating a misfire code, likely a P0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire) or a P030X (where X is the cylinder number, e.g., P0301 for cylinder 1).

Here are the common causes and steps you can take:

  1. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): This is the first and most crucial step. A local auto parts store can often do this for free, or you can use an OBD-II scanner. The specific P030X code will narrow down the problem cylinder.
  2. Inspect Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils:
    • Spark Plugs: Worn, fouled, or incorrectly gapped spark plugs are a very common cause of misfires. Given your vehicle's age and mileage, they might be due for replacement.
    • Ignition Coils: A failing ignition coil pack for a specific cylinder can prevent the spark plug from firing correctly. Look for any visible cracks or signs of arcing on the coil boots.
  3. Fuel System Issues:
    • Fuel Injectors: A clogged or faulty fuel injector can lead to an insufficient fuel supply to a cylinder, causing a misfire. Fuel system cleaners can sometimes help, but a failing injector may need replacement.
    • Fuel Pressure: Low fuel pressure can affect all cylinders, leading to a P0300 code. This is less common but worth considering if other checks yield nothing.
  4. Vacuum Leaks: An unmetered air leak in the intake system can lean out the air-fuel mixture, causing misfires and rough idle. Check hoses and intake manifold gaskets.
  5. Carbon Buildup: As a direct-injection engine, the 3.3T can be susceptible to carbon buildup on the intake valves over time. This restricts airflow and can cause misfires, especially at idle. A professional intake valve cleaning (walnut blasting) might be necessary.

When to See a Shop: If you've checked the basic components like spark plugs and coils and the issue persists, or if you're uncomfortable performing these checks yourself, it's best to take your G70 to a qualified mechanic or a Genesis dealership. Persistent misfires can lead to more severe damage, such as catalytic converter failure, due to unburnt fuel entering the exhaust system. Early diagnosis and repair are key to preventing more costly repairs down-the-road issues.
