2022 Honda Pilot - Rough Idle and Misfire, VCM related?

Vehicle: 2022 Honda Pilot EX-L

Hi all, I've got a 2022 Honda Pilot EX-L with about 30,000 miles on it. Lately, I've been experiencing a rough idle, especially when the engine is warm and I'm stopped at a light. It feels like a slight vibration or shudder. Sometimes, I also get a noticeable misfire, usually just a single stumble, but it's enough to be concerning.

I've heard about Honda's Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system causing issues like this on their V6 engines. Could this be related? I'm worried about potential long-term damage if it is.

Has anyone with a newer Pilot experienced similar rough idling or misfires? What was the diagnosis and solution? Should I be looking into a VCM disabler?

The rough idle and occasional misfire you're experiencing in your 2022 Honda Pilot are indeed symptoms that can be associated with Honda's Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system, particularly on the J-series V6 engines.

  1. VCM Operation: VCM deactivates cylinders (typically 3 of them) under light load conditions to improve fuel economy. The constant switching between 3 and 6 cylinders can sometimes lead to uneven engine operation, especially if components involved in the deactivation process are not functioning optimally.
  2. Spark Plugs/Ignition Coils: Misfires can often be traced to worn spark plugs or failing ignition coils. While 30,000 miles is a bit early for spark plugs, VCM can sometimes accelerate wear on the plugs in the cylinders that are frequently deactivated, leading to carbon buildup.
  3. VCM-Related Carbon Buildup: Over time, oil can get past the piston rings in the deactivated cylinders, leading to carbon buildup on the spark plugs and valves. This can cause misfires when those cylinders reactivate.
  4. Engine Mounts: Sometimes, what feels like a rough idle or misfire can be exacerbated by worn engine mounts, which transmit more engine vibration into the cabin.

Diagnostics:

  • A check engine light will almost certainly illuminate if a misfire is detected, storing codes such as:
    • P0301-P0306: Misfire Detected in Cylinder 1-6 (e.g., P0303 for Cylinder 3)
    • P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
  • A Honda-specific scanner can also monitor VCM operation and cylinder deactivation to see if it's functioning correctly.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the check engine light is flashing (indicating a severe misfire that could damage the catalytic converter) or if the misfires are frequent and severe. Continuing to drive with persistent misfires can cause significant engine damage.
  • A Honda dealership is the best place to start. They can diagnose VCM-related issues, check for any relevant service bulletins, and perform necessary repairs like spark plug replacement or, in more severe cases, piston ring replacement if oil consumption due to VCM is significant. Discussing VCM disablers with your technician is also an option, but be aware of potential warranty implications.
