Vehicle: 2017 Kia Sportage LX

Hey everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2017 Kia Sportage LX (2.4L engine). Over the past few weeks, it's started to occasionally stall, especially when coming to a stop or at low speeds. It's not every time, but enough to be concerning. Sometimes, it also takes a few cranks to start, almost like it's not getting enough fuel.

There's no check engine light on yet, which makes it harder to diagnose. I've tried using premium fuel for a couple of tanks, but it hasn't made a difference. Could this be a fuel pump issue, or something else entirely?

Any insights or similar experiences with a 2016-2018 Sportage would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Stalling and hard starting without an immediate check engine light can be tricky to diagnose, but your symptoms in a 2017 Kia Sportage strongly suggest a problem within the fuel delivery or ignition system.

Possible Causes:

  1. Failing Fuel Pump: A weak or failing fuel pump might not consistently deliver adequate fuel pressure, leading to hard starts and stalling, especially under load or when the engine demands more fuel.
  2. Clogged Fuel Filter: A restricted fuel filter can limit fuel flow, causing similar symptoms. While many modern Kias have in-tank filters, they can still become clogged over time.
  3. Faulty Fuel Pressure Regulator: If the regulator isn't maintaining correct fuel pressure, it can lead to both rich and lean conditions, affecting starting and idle stability.
  4. Dirty or Failing Injectors: Clogged or malfunctioning fuel injectors can cause misfires and poor combustion, leading to stalling.
  5. Ignition System Issues: While less likely given your description, weak spark plugs, coils, or a failing crank/camshaft position sensor could also contribute to hard starts and stalling.

Common OBD Codes (if check engine light eventually comes on):

  • P0171: System Too Lean (often related to insufficient fuel delivery)
  • P0300-P0304: Random/Specific Cylinder Misfire Detected (can be caused by fuel issues)
  • P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (can sometimes be a secondary symptom if fuel delivery is off)

When to See a Shop:

  • As soon as possible: Intermittent stalling can be dangerous, especially in traffic. Have your Sportage inspected by a qualified mechanic without delay.
  • Diagnostic Steps a Shop Will Take:
    1. Perform a fuel pressure test at the fuel rail to check the pump's output and regulator's function.
    2. Scan for any pending or historical diagnostic trouble codes, even if the check engine light isn't on.
    3. Inspect the fuel system for leaks and check the condition of the fuel filter.
    4. Check spark plugs and ignition coils for proper function.
    5. They may also test the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor.
